Lagerlof (1858-1940) स्वीडन (देश का नाम) की लेखिका थीं जिनकी कहानियों का बहुत-सी
भाषाओं में अनुवाद हुआ है । उन सब कहानियों में एक सार्वभौम विषय मिलता है- एक विश्वास
कि मनुष्य की आवश्यक : अच्छाई को समझदारी व प्रेम के द्वारा जगाया जा सकता है । इस
कहानी की पृष्ठभूमि स्वीडन की लौह अयस्क से समृद्ध खदानें हैं जिनका उस देश के इतिहास
व पौराणिक कथाओं में महत्त्वपूर्ण स्थान है। यह कहानी कुछ हद तक एक परीकथा के रूप में

of the Lesson Once
there was a man. He sold small rattraps of wire. He made a very little money by
selling rattraps. One night he stayed with an old man. The old man treated him
well. But the man stole the old man's thirty kronor. The thief got confused in
a forest. In the evening he entered a forge. The owner of the forge happened to
visit his forge. He
mistook the thief to be one of his old acquaintances. He took the thief to his
house. In the daylight, the ironmaster realised his mistake, so he at once,
asked him to leave. But the ironmast…
