18 How did Mr. Lamb's meeting with Derry became a turning point in Derry's life?

Ans: Derry always tried to avoid and meet people due to his burnt and disfigured face. His burnt face was not taken kindly by the people. People treated him cruelly. This made him withdrawn and defiant. he began to feel that he could do nothing in the world with his half and deformed face. Mr. Lamb brought home to him that he had all other parts of the body, he had a brain to think and decide. He can perform anything like others around him. May be he would do much better than others. He encouraged Derry to read, listen and think. He asked Derry only to listen to sweet things and be ready to face the world as it came with his falf face, he also helped him in accepting the fact that he had to live his life with a positive attitude towards it. As a result, Derry became bold and began not to bother what the world said about him. This brought dramatic change in his life.

19 Attempt a character sketch of the Crofter. How did he treat the peddler?

Ans: The character of the ironmaster takes several turns as the story unfolds itself. His is not a balanced character. We first meet him at the forge. The first thing that he notice after entering the forge is the tall ragamuffin who has eased his way so close to the furnace that steam rises from his wet rage. He walks close up to him, looks him over very carefully, then tears off his slouch hat to get a better view of his face. He takes him for Nils Olof, an old acqaintance. He invites him home with him to the manor house. But it doesn't please the tramp as he thinks going up to the manor house would be like throwing himself voluntarily into the lion's den. The ironmaster assumes that the peddler feels embarrassed because of his miserable clothing. He urges him to come with him to his house, but in vain. Then he sends his daughter to bring the peddler to the manor house. But when his guest is well groomed, the ironmaster does not seem pleased. He realises his mistake. He sees the peddler in his true colours. He says that he would not be surprised if the sheriff would like to have something to say in the matter. Then he asks him to get out of there as fast as he can. However, his daughter intercedes for him. The ironmaster gets even more upset when he learns at Church that one of the old crofters of the ironworks has been robbed by a man who goes round selling rattraps. He turnts her daughter saying that (he) was a fine fellow she let into the house. He only wonders how many silver spoons are left in the cupboard by this time. Thus, we find that ironmaster's attitude goes on changing towards the tramp as the story heads towards the end.
