15. What changes are involved in the process of growing up?
Ans-
In the poem, 'Childhood', the poet explains the process of growing up.
Throughout the poem, he discusses one by one the changes which are involved in
the process of growing up. First, one starts differentiating between real and
imaginary things like that of the absence of Hell and Heaven in Geography.
Secondly, one starts discriminating between hypocrisy and genuineness like that
of the difference between fake preaching and actual doing of the adults.
Thirdly, one starts developing independent thinking which is not influenced and
directed by others. Thus, the poet emphasises that the loss of childhood is
involved in the process of growing up but, at the same time, this loss of
innocence is compensated by some gains which come with adolescence such as an
ability of rationalization and discrimination as well as a sense of
individuality and self-confidence.
