7. How did Douglas nearly drown in "Deep Water"?
Ans-
When Douglas was ten or eleven years old, he was sitting alone on the edge of
the YMCA pool. A larger, older boy suddenly picked him up and tossed him into
the deep end of the pool. Douglas, who did not know how to swim, sank to the
bottom and panicked. Despite making several desperate attempts to push himself
up to the surface, he inhaled water and nearly drowned before someone rescued
him.
8. What change does Edla bring in the peddler's life in
"The Rattrap"?
Ans-
Edla brings about a profound transformation in the peddler through her genuine
compassion, understanding, and respect. Even after discovering he was not the
captain her father thought he was, she treated him with dignity and insisted he
stay for Christmas. This unconditional kindness awakened the essential goodness
in the peddler, motivating him to abandon his dishonest ways and return the
stolen money.
9. What is the central idea of the poem "Keeping
Quiet"?
Ans-
The central idea of Pablo Neruda's "Keeping Quiet" is the necessity
of quiet introspection and creating a feeling of mutual understanding among
human beings. The poet urges humanity to pause all physical and destructive
activities for a brief moment of silence to reflect on their actions, stop
harming nature and one another, and foster a sense of universal brotherhood.
10. Why did the Tiger King decide to kill all the tigers?
Ans-
The Tiger King decided to kill the tigers because the chief astrologer
predicted at his birth that his death would ultimately be caused by a tiger. To
protect himself, prove the prophecy wrong, and ensure his survival, the
Maharaja vowed to kill exactly one hundred tigers before attending to any other
matters of the state.
SECTION - C (2x3=6) (Long Answer Type
11. What do Describe how Douglas overcame his fear of water.
What does this tell you about courage and determination?
Ans-
To overcome his paralyzing fear of water, Douglas realized he needed
professional help, so he hired a swimming instructor. The instructor took a
systematic approach, putting a belt around Douglas attached to a cable to
ensure his safety. Over several months, the instructor taught him how to exhale
underwater, use his legs, and coordinate his strokes, building a swimmer
"piece by piece." Even after the instructor finished, Douglas wasn't
completely satisfied. To ensure the lingering terror was completely gone, he
swam long distances alone in Lake Wentworth and Warm Lake, successfully
conquering his phobia.
This
journey beautifully illustrates that courage is not the absence of fear, but
the triumph over it. Douglas’s story shows that with relentless determination,
strategic planning, and sheer willpower, one can overcome even the most deeply
rooted traumas. It echoes President Roosevelt's sentiment that "All we
have to fear is fear itself."
12. Discuss the theme of fate versus free will in The Tiger
King. Was the king able to escape his destiny? Explain.
Ans-
The story explores the conflict between fate (destiny) and free will through
the Maharaja's obsessive quest. Fate is established at the very beginning when
the astrologer prophesies that the king will die at the hands of a tiger. In
response, the King uses his immense power and free will to declare war on the
tigers, ruthlessly hunting down ninety-nine of them and banning anyone else
from hunting them in his state. He believes that through sheer force, wealth,
and determination, he can rewrite his own destiny.
Ultimately,
however, the king was unable to escape his fate. The irony of the story lies in
the fact that the hundredth tiger he shot merely fainted from the shock of the
bullet whizzing past it. The king's actual death was caused by a poorly carved,
inexpensive wooden toy tiger he bought for his son's birthday. A tiny sliver of
wood pierced his hand, causing a severe infection that killed him. Thus, the
prophecy was fulfilled, proving that destiny is inescapable, no matter how much
power or free will one exercises to defy it.
