Ans-
To overcome his paralyzing fear of water, Douglas realized he needed
professional help, so he hired a swimming instructor. The instructor took a
systematic approach, putting a belt around Douglas attached to a cable to
ensure his safety. Over several months, the instructor taught him how to exhale
underwater, use his legs, and coordinate his strokes, building a swimmer
"piece by piece." Even after the instructor finished, Douglas wasn't
completely satisfied. To ensure the lingering terror was completely gone, he
swam long distances alone in Lake Wentworth and Warm Lake, successfully
conquering his phobia.
This
journey beautifully illustrates that courage is not the absence of fear, but
the triumph over it. Douglas’s story shows that with relentless determination,
strategic planning, and sheer willpower, one can overcome even the most deeply
rooted traumas. It echoes President Roosevelt's sentiment that "All we
have to fear is fear itself."
12. Discuss the theme of fate versus free will in The Tiger
King. Was the king able to escape his destiny? Explain.
Ans-
The story explores the conflict between fate (destiny) and free will through
the Maharaja's obsessive quest. Fate is established at the very beginning when
the astrologer prophesies that the king will die at the hands of a tiger. In
response, the King uses his immense power and free will to declare war on the
tigers, ruthlessly hunting down ninety-nine of them and banning anyone else
from hunting them in his state. He believes that through sheer force, wealth,
and determination, he can rewrite his own destiny.
Ultimately,
however, the king was unable to escape his fate. The irony of the story lies in
the fact that the hundredth tiger he shot merely fainted from the shock of the
bullet whizzing past it. The king's actual death was caused by a poorly carved,
inexpensive wooden toy tiger he bought for his son's birthday. A tiny sliver of
wood pierced his hand, causing a severe infection that killed him. Thus, the
prophecy was fulfilled, proving that destiny is inescapable, no matter how much
power or free will one exercises to defy it.
