Forests are the true wealth of a country. They are called the 'Green Gold' because they are a country's wealth. There are numerous advantages of having lush green forests. They give us a number of valuable products. We get timber for building our houses, wood for furniture, fuel for cooking food etc. Besides these, we get many other useful products such as honey, wax, gum, oil, herbs, lac and dyes. The medicinal value of the trees is well established. Peepal tree gives maximum of oxygen gas which is very necessary for life. Neem tree has its own value. It is the most antiseptic tree. Many medicines are made from its leaves.

Ans. The boy had lost his ball while playing near the harbour. He had bounced his ball in his game and it had fallen into the water. The loss of his ball was a tragic experience for the boy. For a grown-up person, it may be a small or insignificant loss. But the boy felt the loss acutely. He remained upset by his grief. He was emotionally attached to the ball. He kept on staring into the harbour where the ball was lost.

Ans. The poet makes a clever comparison between the fog and the cat.

Three things similar between the two are:

(i) The fog as well as the cat has soft feeling.

(ii) The fog appears from nowhere like a cat. Its movements are secret and silent like those of a cat.

(iii) The fog moves away as suddenly as it comes, just like a cat.

The drains are seldom cleaned and washed. There are regular pits on the street and water collect there. They become good breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

The matter was brought to the notice of the Sanitary Inspector, but he has not paid any attention to our complaint. I hope you will kindly look into the matter personally and will redress our grievances.

Student Life or, An Ideal Student

Student life is one of the most important part of the life of a person. An Ideal student should try to form good habits. He must learn good manners. He has to be kind, gentle and polite. Student life is a happy period of life. It is a life of freedom. But an ideal student uses this time in a better way. He has to develop his body, mind and soul. He has to be hardworking. He should not be after an easy life. He must have some ideals in life. He should try to make his future. He has to be a good citizen.

Importance of Trees

Trees play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance in nature. During the day, trees inhale carbon dioxide from the air and exhale oxygen which we in tum breathe in. Trees provide relief from the scorching heat by providing shade to birds, animals and men, and certain birds and animals make their homes in the branches of trees. They also prevent soil erosion and help in cleansing the atmosphere of pollution. So, it should be our sincere duty to help in the conservation of trees.

Q. 49. How would the baker come everyday? Why did the children run to meet him?

or, How did the baker make his presence in the morning? What did the baker wear in the days when the author was a child?

Ans. The baker came with the jhang-jhang sound of his bamboo stick. He carried his basket on his head, supporting it with one hand. With the other hand, he would bang the bamboo on the ground. Thus everyone would come to know of his arrival. He would greet with 'Good morning and place the basket on the vertical bamboo.

The baker then wore a shirt and trousers. These trousers were shorter than the full-length trousers. But they were longer than half pants. They reached just below the knees. Even today it is known as the dress of a pader.

All children including the author eagerly awaited the arrival of baker to their house. When the baker came with loaves of bread in his basket the children had to be pushed away to take delivery. They would climb a bench or the parapet to peep into the basket. They loved bread bangles. When they got their share, they did not even care to brush their teeth or wash their mouths properly.

Q. 50. What legends did Rajvir tell about the discovery of tea? or, What is the origin of tea as given in the chapter?

Ans. Rajvir told two legends 'about the discovery of tea. One was the Chinese legend and the other was the Indian legend.

The Chinese legend says that there was a Chinese emperor. He always boiled water before drinking it. One day some twigs were burning under the pot A few leaves from the twigs fell into the pot. They gave the water a delicious flavour. It is said that those were tea-leaves.

According to the Indian legend, there was a Buddhist ascetic named Bodhidharma. He often felt sleepy during his meditations. To stop this, he cut off his eyelids. It is said that ten tea plants grew out of the eyelids. The leaves of these plants when put in hot water and drunk banished sleep.

Ans. Matilda was a pretty and young lady, she was bom in the family of clerks. She had neither dowry nor hopes. She always wanted to live a rich life. She believed in show-off. She had no means of becoming known. She was ambitious lady. She wanted to become popular. She wanted to be loved by everyone. She wanted to marry a man either rich or distinguished.

But lastly she married a petty clerk in the office of Board of Education. She was simple but she was unhappy. She always suffered from poverty al both, the homes of her husband and parents. She was a sort tempered but tactful lady. She would not like to miss a chance to become popular. She was honest too. So, she returned the necklace of Mme. Forstier and bore all sorts of hardship.

Ans. Griffin was a brilliant scientist. He carried several experiments related to invisibility of human beings. At last he proved by his experiments that human body could become transparent like a sheet of glass. Then he swallowed certain rare drugs and he became invisible.

Griffin was rather a lawless person. His landlord disliked him. So he set fire to the house. He misused his discovery to rob and harm others. He was not a man of loving nature. He disliked friendship. He refused the friendship of Mrs. Hall. He robbed the clergyman. He became angry when someone disturbed him. He hit the constable and other persons. He tried to terrify Mrs. Hall.too.

Hence we can say that Griffin was a brilliant scientist, but he misused his discovery. He was a lawless and criminal-minded person.

She was soft-spoken (मृदुभाषी). She knew child psychology. She was friendly. We can conclude that the teacher possessed all good qualities of a true teacher. She had a great role in moulding Bholi's personality.
